"When Calls the Heart" aired the season one finale, "Prelude to a Kiss," on March 29, 2014 on Hallmark Channel. The finale left storylines up in the air, seemingly as cliffhangers for a second season, even though Hallmark has yet to announce a renewal. The series is inspired by the bestselling novel by author Janette Oke.

"When Calls The Heart” stars Lori Loughlin, Erin Krakow, Daniel Lissing and Jack Wagner. James Brolin guest stars as Judge Jedidiah Black, the Circuit Judge in charge of dispensing justice in the case of the coal mine accident that killed several of the miners of Coal Valley.

The townspeople are shocked when an anonymous donation is made to rebuild the church. Elizabeth figures out that Jack is the donor and tells the townspeople that the Mountie donated the reward money from the capture of the outlaw gang. Jack has decided that he is in Coal Valley to stay, so his generous contribution is his commitment to the town.

Jack tells Elizabeth (Krakow) that she is the woman for him and gives her a sketch of the two of them. He tell her he does not want her to leave for the teaching opportunity back East. Elizabeth tells him that she is not going anywhere and they share a romantic kiss. Pictures of the long awaited kiss are attached in the photo slideshow. When Calls the Heart romance and finally a kiss on Hallmark

Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) is a persistant woman who still wants to marry Jack. She surprises Elizabeth by telling her she is staying in town to start a theater group, with the help of the mayor. Rosemary may be backing off temporarily, but waiting in the wings for her former fiance to change his mind while posing a threat to Elizabeth.

Abigail (Lori Loughlin) has opened up her heart to the possibility of love, but is shocked to see a wedding ring and family picture in Bill Avery's (Jack Wagner) room. Is charming Mountie Bill a married man, or is there some other possible explanation for the ring?

Judge Jedidiah Black (James Brolin) does not appear until toward the end of the episode. He is there to rule on the charges against Gowen (Martin Cummins) and the coal mining company. Anyone who hopes to see Gowen get his come-uppance is bound to be disappointed, because the trial is not shown. This leaves the resolution to the mine explosion in limbo. Will there be justice for the miners in Coal Valley?

Executive Producers & Creators Michael Landon Jr. & Brian Bird had a message posted on Facebook, thanking fans (called Hearties) for their support. Landon Jr. compared the stories of Coal Valley in "When Calls the Heart" to Walnut Grove in "Litte House on the Prairie," his father's series.
