When a Good Deal is a Bad Deal

Everyone loves a good deal especially on things that tend to get pricey, like wine. Living in the Arlington, Virginia area you have most likely walked into your local Safeway store and seen all the yellow signs covering the shelves in the wine section. For wine lovers, those bright yellow signs are like Christmas: they mean there is a sale!

However, not every sale is good. Strange to think that a sale can be a bad sale, just sounds kind of silly doesn’t it? Safeway has a great promo that they run periodically – on select wines you can buy one bottle for the regular price and get the second for one dime!

Which brings us to “Good Deal” vs “Bad Deal”. There is a pretty good chance that you purchase wine at a number of different stores, but do you pay attention to the price tag at each store? Below are a list of wines that are featured at Safeway right now and their prices at various other stores in Arlington. Because grocery stores have thin profit margins on most items, sometimes they make up the shortfall on select items. Not all Safeway deals are good, but the same may hold true with prices at other stores.

Good Deals:

A by Acacia Chardonnay can be found at Total Wine & More for $8.49. Safeway regular price is $12.49, but with the Safeway deal buy one and get the second for a dime you are spending $6.25 each. Not bad.

Mark West Pinot Noir is listed for $7.97 at Total Wine & More. And at Target for $9.99. Regular price at Safeway is $13.99, and you get the second bottle for a dime – that’s $7 a bottle.

Menage a Trois Rouge at Total Wine & More is $7.97 and at Safeway $13.99 with the second bottle for a dime - $7 a bottle.

Layer Cake Cabernet at Total Wine and More is $12.99 and at Safeway is $21.49 with the second bottle for a dime - $10.75 a bottle

Alamos Malbec at Total Wine & More is $7.47 and at Safeway is $13.99 with the second for a dime - $7 a bottle

A by Acacia Pinot Noir at Total Wine & More is $11.99 at Safeway $16.49 with the second for a dime - $8.25 a bottle

Bad Deals:

Chateau Ste Michelle Chardonnay at Total Wine & More is $7.47 at Costco is $7.40. Safeway’s regular price is $19.99 second for a dime - $10 a bottle…I don’t think so, not with Costco’s & Total Wine's great prices!

Chateau St Jean Merlot at Total Wine & More is $8.99. Safeway regular price is $19.99 second for a dime - $10 each

Smoking Loon Merlot at Total Wine & More is $5.97. Safeway regular price is $11.99 second for a dime - $6 each

The point of this article is not only to make the reader aware of awesome deals and maybe not so awesome deals, but to become more aware of the price tag on wines you typically buy. Pay attention. Why spend $10 a bottle on Chardonnay when you know you can get it for $7? It’s not about being cheap either, it’s about being a savvy wine buyer. Wine does not have to burn a hole in your wallet every time you grab a bottle. Enjoy the never-ending sales, but just be aware the sale may not always be such a good deal.
