When 2 Filipino greats come together: Nonito Donaire Jr. hooks up w/ Scratch icon DJ QBert

Pinoy Power 3 just got an added boost from one of the true legends and icons of Hip-Hop, San Francisco Bay Area based scratch dj, and arguably the best in the business DJ QBert.

Q hooked up with 'The Filipino Flash' Nonito Donaire Jr. to lend his expertise and arrange the entrance song for his main event bout against Gerson Guerrero on Saturday, February 13 at the Las Vegas Hilton.

For those who are unfamiliar with the legendary dj, I sat down and spoke to the guy to give not just fight fans but Filipinos as well across the globe a closer look at another one of our very own world class talents.

Known as Rich Quitevis to his inner circle, he got the moniker QBert from the popular old-school little alien-looking video game character. As to why Filipino greats like Q-Bert and Manny 'Pac Man' Pacquiao base their aliases from 80's quarter-gobbling arcade games is beyond me, but heck that's definitely good company. I might just drop the 'dSource' and start going by 'Super Mario' or 'Balrog' or something.

What I do know is that QBert ranks among the most influential and innovative djs of all time. He has appeared in numerous commercials for companies like Apple. Q also has provided soundtracks for several video games such as Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Tony Hawk: Underground wherein he is also an unlockable playable character. He has released various of DVDs including his highly acclaimed scratch movie Wave Twisters and has sold out hundreds of shows worldwide for almost 2 decades now. To say Q is to turntables while Pacquiao is to boxing is by no means a stretch.

Check out this exclusive and rare interview I did with one of the most talented people in the planet. I also attached the audio/video underneath the transcript of some highlights from my interview with Q.

 ON HIS COLLABORATION WITH DONAIRE

"He and his manager came over and was like 'Hey do you want to do Nonito's entrance number?' and I was like 'Yea, sure, let's do it,' and I thought of him, you know being a Filipino warrior, I thought of some tribal type of music, so I made some kind of tribal hip-hop sountrack."

Note: I used an excerpt of the track as the intro of my interview with Q below in the Youtube video.

ON BEING A BOXING FAN

"Yea, of course! I kinda grew up doing Kali which is like boxing except with knives and sticks you know.. 'Eskrima, so yea, we've always been into martial arts since we were kids,"

"I've never missed a (Pacquiao) fight."

ON WHAT KEEPS HIM MOTIVATED AFTER ALMOST 20 YEARS IN HIP-HOP

"Well you know, I found, I always asked people what do they want in life and everybody wants to be happy right? Everyone is seeking happiness you know so okay I found out okay 'What's the real happiness?' The ultimate happiness is giving and the ultimate evil selfishness so might as well give all my life because I want to be happy too. My whole life is dedicated in making everyone's lives better with what I know best which is I guess my music and hopefully when I make people happy, it comes back to me- and it does. And when I see people happy, that's all I really want."

Q also talked about his online DJ school which has more than a thousand of students right now and his recent trip to Manila where he did a show for the benefit of the "Typhoon Ondoy" victims. Listen to the full interview below.

Great interview, dSource! That IS odd how QBert and Pacquiao, both arguably the best at what they do, adopted 80's video game monikers. Lesson: If you're Filipino and want to be great, start googling old school Atari games. Maybe Floyd should use the name Frogger because he keeps himself from getting flattened by ducking & dodging (competitive fights).
