Whelming Wave from 'Born of the Gods'

Whelming Wave is an interesting new blue card from Wizards of the Coast's expert "Magic: The Gathering" expansion set "Born of the Gods." This rare sorcery Unsummons every creature on the battlefield except Krakens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents.

Blue generally doesn't get mass removal. The closest recent spell we've had is Cyclonic Rift. Although Whelming Wave won't destroy your opponent's creatures like Wrath of God or Fated Retribution will, it'll still significantly slow down your rival's horde of attackers.

One way to look at Whelming Wave is as a cheaper to cast Evacuation. Perhaps a better comparison is to look at Whelming Wave as a less powerful (and easier to cast) Inundate. While you won't have the advantage of casting it as an instant, you'll sometimes make out on top by having a creature still on the battlefield while your opponent doesn't.

In Standard abusing Whelming Wave with the specified creatures simply won't happen to much without more Krakens, Leviathans, Octupuses, and Serpents seeing print. Let's face it: If you have a Tromokratis, Shipbreaker Kraken, or have managed to pull off Kiora, the Crashing Wave's ultimate ability then Whelming Wave seems a bit more like overkill.

One idea for abusing Whelming Wave might be to make a crazy commander deck filled with nothing but Krakens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents. While the vast majority of the game's Krakens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents are large creatures to cast they aren't that expensive to acquire on the secondary market. It might not be the most competitive deck idea, however commander was founded on fun. If you manage to live long enough to build yourself an army of Krakens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents and draw Whelming Wave you should be able to take out all your adversaries at once.

How will you use Whelming Wave?
