The Chihuahua is a one-of-a-kind breed of small dog with so many special and unique characteristics. Most people refer to them as ankle biters with big mouths but this is not a fair attribution of the breed. There is a lot more to this little dog that makes it a great and comforting companion for many pet owners. If there is more you need to know, contact the local Rockford-area Humane Society or your veterinarian as listed below or one closest to your home with any questions or concerns about the little dog with an amazing character.
The Chihuahua is not a breed for everyone, especially if you are a large dog lover. It is common to see this little guy shiver and tremble, do have barking issues usually the result of fear, and can be difficult around small children. This dog is considered one of the oldest breeds in the world and was named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. However, there has been some confusion as to where the breed originated and a question or theory as to whether the Chihuahua actually comes from the Mediterranean Island of Malta.
The Chihuahua was first recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904. It has since been known as the smallest dog breed in the world depending on genetics and history. They come in a huge variety of colors and are available in either the smooth coat and long-haired Chihuahua breeds. Standards for both are the same except for the hair length. Teacup Chihuahuas are not a separate breed but genetically smaller in size.
Chihuahuas are exceptional little dogs with big personalities that do not fit into everyone’s lifestyle and family. The Chihuahua is a very lively, loyal and adventurous little dog that can be stubborn, strong-willed and very fragile. Chihuahuas are said to be a one-person dog, is very protective and can be jealous. Although they do get along with other pets in the same home, they do better with others of their own breed. They can do very well with older children that have been taught how to respect and care for a small pet. It is true that some of these dogs can be a little snippy but if trained and socialized at a very young age, the Chihuahua can make an excellent family lap dog.
The problem that many people have is treating their Chihuahua as a baby; however, you need to remember that, even though it is small, it is still a dog that requires training, socializing, rules and exercising the mind and body. Train your little dog as soon as you get it, socialize it among other people and pets and make sure that the darling little pup knows and follows house rules. Exercise is important along with providing plenty of toys to stimulate the mind. The Chihuahua is a feisty little dog, cute and cuddly, with a very loving disposition, making it a great companion for some.
