What you may not know about comedian Jeff Dunham

Comedian Ventriloquist, Jeff Dunham, is no stranger to the stage. There is not much of a story when it comes to this all-star, talented man and his puppets. Most may think someone holding a puppet would be considered a joke in the comedy industry. Dunham wanted to take that to another level and prove to be the best ventriloquist ever. Needless to say, Dunham has achieved his goal. Yet, he keeps going, and with a successful career behind him, the only way for him to look is ahead.

As many perks that come with being a successful comedian, there are also one or two downfalls. One of those downfalls is time. Time is not a luxury of Dunham's. However, he was able to answer some of my questions after his popular comedy show that took place in Indianapolis, Indiana this past November.

In 2009, Executive Editor, Josh Levin from titled Jeff Dunham as "America's Favorite Comedian," stating that Dunham grossed more in the year 2008 than any other stand-up act that year. When I asked Dunham who he considered to be his own favorite comedian, he explained that [American comedian, author, playwright, social critic, and actor] Lewis Black is one of his favorites.

Many remember the late and great, Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show." When Carson was host, stand-up comedians considered being on "The Tonight Show" to be the holy grail of all stand-up gigs, especially after comedian, Freddie Prinze (father to Freddie Prinze, Jr.) made it to Carson's couch. After a few snags, Dunham achieved this back in 1990. After achieving that goal, I asked Dunham what he might consider to be his next "holy grail."

Dunham answered, "Honestly, it's just a journey. I hope in the near future that we can do a couple of films and bring the characters to life on the big screen, plus continue to expand our presence worldwide. At this point we're just having fun filling the dance card."

Dunham answered one question for me that I could not help but ask. After all, this man is known as a comedian. But, with him comes an array of unique characters that are his own, custom made puppets.

I asked him, "If all your puppets were caught in a fire and you could only save one, why would you choose that particular puppet?"

Dunham responded, "It goes without saying, that Achmed certainly has allowed me to break through in places that otherwise might have remained closed for a while. His clips on You Tube put whatever ride it is that the characters and I are on into a very high orbit. Achmed is definitely a crowd pleaser, but then again he’s already dead."
