On Oct. 27 National Geo aired American Blackout. This docudrama portrayed what would happen if there was a nationwide power outage. This outage was not caused by any terrible storm, EMP, or a meteor, it was caused by a computer hacker that gained access to the systems that control ALL of the United States power. Something that simple and small as the click of a mouse from the basement of some computer geek caused mass destruction and death.
So is this really possible? According to some yes it is. The New York Times ran an article about how two guys managed to break in to many different systems just recently. Most of the electrical grid is run from single locations by computer and vulnerable to attack or failures that cascade across the grid. There have already been such attacks this year.
So what do you as a family do? Well you get prepared! While it is impossible to prepare for everything there are some things that every emergency kit should have:
- Enough food, water and medical supplies for 72 hours for everyone including pets
- A first aid kit
- flashlight batteries
- Candles, lanterns, waterproof matches
- Battery powered radio
- While you are getting these things together there are some other things that you can do to prepare. You can learn how to cook meals without using electricity, you can stage a personal "blackout" for a night or two to test your preps and see what more you can do. But the most important thing that you can do is learn to trust yourself and your preps to see you and your family through an emergency.
