Mountain West powers are legit
The question is who had the bigger win? No. 6 TCU over-powering Pac-10 contender Oregon State or Utah upsetting Big East contender No. 15 Pitt in Salt Lake City.

Both wins showed why the Mountain West might be at its strongest point ever as a football conference.

Throw in BYU’s win over Washington and the three teams that will contend for the conference title have made it known that they will all be pushing for a BCS berth.

November 6 should already be circled on everyone’s calendar. That’s when the Horned Frogs visit the Utes for what could determine not only the Mountain West champ, but also a potential BCS berth.

And if TCU rolls through the Mountain West, then Boise State shouldn't be the only non-BCS team in the picture for a shot at the BCS national title.

Aztecs finally are a balanced attacked
Last year for San Diego State, it was all passing. Everyone knew that. Ryan Lindley lit it up by throwing to Vincent Brown and DeMarco Sampson.

Lindley lit up the Nicholls State defense last Saturday, but there was a new component. The Aztecs were able to run the football.

In addition to SDSU’s 313 passing yards, the offense racked up 226 rushing yards.

Sophomore Walter Kazee gained 74, freshman Ronnie Hillman had 72 and senior Davon Brown chipped in 66 yards as the starter.

“It was great,” Lindley told the Union-Tribune. “We saw it coming in spring ball and through the development we had in the offseason training with the o-line and the way the running backs progressed. I’m excited that we had a group of guys that got it done.”

But now the question is whether the Aztecs will be able to continue this balanced attack when it plays Division IA opponents.

Boise State's No. 1 in my Top 25
I’ve decided to move Boise State to No. 1 for this week. The Broncos, in a hostile environment, almost 3,000 miles away from home, were able to deliver a sucker punch to a top 10 team in Virginia Tech, give up their lead, and then march back with less than two minutes to regain the lead and beat the Hokies.

Yeah, they deserve to be No. 1, at least for this week.

Gone from the rankings this week are North Carolina, Navy and Cincinnati. New this week are Auburn, West Virginia and Arizona.

1) Boise State
2) Alabama
3) TCU
4) Ohio State
5) Texas
