What we learned from Marvel Studios' Hall H presentation

Comic Con is a yearly event where many fans and self described nerds flock to San Diego to see all sorts of cool things from the world of comics, horror and sci fi. In recent years, the major studios have followed suit, filling Con events with previews of coming attractions. Marvel Studios is no different. There was much build-up for what Marvel would roll out this year, and they seemed to focus solely on 2015 releases Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man. There were a few surprises along the way, for a full recap, look down below:

ANT-MAN

  • Steve Weintraub of Collider describes applause for new director Peyton Reed as "muted".
  • Evangeline Lilly will be Hope van Dyne, daughter of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet van Dyne (The Wasp)
  • Corey Stoll (House of Cards, Midnight in Paris) will play Darren Cross/Yellow Jacket, both according to Marvel
  • Stoll possibly replaces Patrick Wilson who left Ant Man this week
  • Cross will be a former protege of Hank Pym, of course things supposedly are not so hunky-dory now.
  • Shooting on Ant Man begins on August 18th
  • Footage is shown including dialogue with Pym and trying to control an ant.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

  • Joss Whedon was actually not kidding about getting knee surgery earlier this week, Get Well Soon Joss.
  • Robert Downey Jr. enters to a Michael Jackson track, other cast follow.
  • Avengers talk about coming on to the project in the first place, Jeremy Renner let RDJ convince him, Cobie Smulders was introduced by Joss Whedon personally.
  • Chris Evans praises Chris Hemsworth's portrayal of Thor.
  • Evans also noted that Capt, Steve Rogers is up to speed tech wise, but still looking for his own place in the 21st Century
  • Aaron Taylor-Johnson wowed by Comic Con (first timer). Talks Avenger's dynamic, says they "bounce off each other"
  • Story said to mix good/lighthearted with dark/serious bad elements.
  • Paul Bettany talks about actually having to film bits now as The Vision
  • James Spader talks about the challenge of playing Ultron, or a robot in general with the mo-cap technology, says Ultron will be 8-feet tall.
  • Elizabeth Olsen talks being intimidated at first by the movie, she feels optimistic about the future
  • Robert Downey Jr. jokes (maybe) that Olsen/Wanda Maxinoff cast a spell on him 2 weeks ago and that ""it burns"
  • Scarlett Johannson apologizes for being unable to attend via video
  • Footage: Avengers party scene, everyone trying to lift Mjolnir, all failing, Steve Rogers moves it a little
  • Footage: Ultron being scary, "The only path to peace is your extinction", fully formed he seems terrifying
  • Footage: Hulkbuster Armor (Editorial Note: I'm now very jealous of all Hall H attendees)
  • Footage ends with Tony Stark looking over the bodies of the other Avengers. And the Crowd goes Wild.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY/PHASE 3

  • Josh Brolin makes a surprise appearance (despite showing up earlier for a Sin City 2 panel), confirmed as Thanos
  • Everyone else had flowers, Brolin given a purple rose, he eats it and tosses the stem
  • Chris Pratt and James Gunn say hello from the UK, (it's almost 3AM there)
  • GUARDIANS 2 confirmed for July 28th, 2017

Overall still a great haul of news, footage and confirmations. Wish Marvel had given more detail about what movies would be coming up until 2019 with all those new slots they announced. Thanks to Steven Weintraub and Ryan Penagos for live tweeting this event!
