In the morning, bleary-eyed children were walking to school as police still had the area around 11318 Miranda Street cordoned off.
The blast ripped off the roof of a pickup truck and it occurred not far from the North Hollywood police station of the Los Angeles Police Department on Burbank Boulevard.
The blast is being investigated as a crime by the bomb squad and it shattered windows and startled residents just after midnight.
"Everything was shaken, it was a big noise," said neighbor Laura Weir. She said her dog started barking and within minutes she heard a helicopter overhead and the fire department.
There was a propane tank inside a Nissan Titan pickup parked in a driveway of an apartment complex. Los Angeles Police spokesman Lt. Todd Hankel said the bomb squad experts are looking at the propane tank as being the cause of the explosion. Some of the surrounding buildings and cars were damaged. No one was injured in the massive blast.
"It was a pretty good boom, it scared the neighborhood," Hankel said.
