There are two situations during which an employer and employee share the employee’s aspirations for their future: the hiring interview and the employee evaluation.
When asked, people will most often mention a job title and/or person’s name.
To be truly effective in a position when should not aspire to be like another person. Consider these words of Olympic runner Florence Griffith Joyner,
“Do not aspire to be like me,” she once said, “be better, shoot higher.”
No employee should ever want to be as good as the CEO, manager or coworker. They need to want to be better. After all, when it comes time for a new CEO, you want one better than the existing CEO. If they ever become the new CEO they will need to have a new vision of bigger and brighter greater things to take the company far into the future. With that goal in mind, employees should have the desire to learn new skills and techniques that will equip them for their next position before they assume the new position.
Imagine the excitement the recruiter will have on an applicant says they want to become so valuable to the company that their goal is to become even greater than the current leader of the company.
Unfortunately Joyner’s speed could not out run an early death. She died in her sleep in 1998 as a result of an epileptic seizure.
