What Valentine's Day should remind us of

On Valentine's Day there is the usual push by commercial interests to further their reason for being and their financial bottom line. The ads may say that if you truly love her/him you will buy this or that kind of product. It's not true, but greeting card companies, chocolate and jewelry companies would be glad if we believed their fiction. True love is of a different sort. In fact it is not often the young and the beautiful who can show us the best example of that. True love is something that may be seen among those that most ads ignore, the elderly. It is what kept their relationships alive for 50, 60 or more years.

The love chapter of the Bible tells us that that guy/gal in the movies with the so-called romantic accent has nothing to do with love. That accent is like an annoying noise compared to real love. All the faith of all the churches, all the giving to charity by the most benevolent philanthropists, or sacrificing our whole lives for good causes are insignificant if it was not done in love. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." *

Love does not stop when it becomes inconvenient. Marriages that survive have discovered the secret to keeping love alive. The line that states for better for worse really means that the worse part of marriage will also come. The vow that we make in sickness and in health is also real. Sickness will come at one time or another. True love is found in the man who takes early retirement to look after his invalid wife after she has a stroke. True love is found in the woman who remains by her man's side when he comes home from war with both legs shot off. Foreign accents will stop. Charities will come and go. Churches will grow and die but faith and hope will remain. Those who love have true greatness.
