This week sees three more new releases and two movies new to Ames enter the market in hopes of luring you into the theater and snatching away your hard-earned dollars.
The Grey (Rated R) – After an Alaskan oil drilling team's plane crashes, they must battle the elements and a pack of wolves if they hope to survive. While this theme had been done to death, I'm hoping this movie brings something to the table. At the very least, it has the always watchable Liam Neeson as its star.
Man on a Ledge (Rated PG-13) – A ex-con accused of stealing a large diamond goes out on a ledge (literally) to prove his innocence. The movie stars Sam Worthington as the con and Elizabeth Banks as the police shrink trying to talk him down. Of course, since this is a thriller, things aren't all as they appear.
One for the Money (Rated PG-13) – Stephanie Plum, formerly in lingerie sales, becomes a bounty hunter after losing her job. Her first case? Bring in a wanted police detective from her romantic past. This movie is based on the popular fiction series by Janet Evanovich. I had high hopes for this until it suddenly appeared to become one of the most miscast movies of the year. I hope it's better than the trailer.
The Descendants (Rated R) – A land baron in Hawaii in the midst of a huge land deal must learn to reconnect with his two daughters after his wife is injured in a boating accident. Finally opening in Ames, The Descendants stars George Clooney and has been one of the darlings of the award circuit this year. Anonymous (Rated PG-13) – Did William Shakespeare really author all of his plays and poetry? Director Roland Emmerich believes they were, in fact, written by Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford. His movie follows this line set against the succession of Queen Elizabeth I. I've been looking forward to seeing this film, and I'm glad it's finally going to play here in Ames.

Albert Nobbs (Rated R) – A woman disguises herself as a man to work and survive in 19th century Ireland only to find herself trapped in that role. Glenn Close has received rave reviews and Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for her role at the title character. The previews look amazing.
Albert Nobbs is opening in Des Moines at the Fleur Cinema & Cafe and the Cinemark Century 20 Jordan Creek.
