A remake of Stephen King's film Carrie releases tomorrow, October 18th, in local Miami theaters and nationwide. The film stars the creepy kid Chloe Moretz from films such as Kick-Ass and Kick-Ass 2 in which she played the role of 'Hit Girl'. The two films would have been less than mediocre and worse than they actually were if it were not for the sixteen year-old actress. Viewers may also remember her from Let Me In (2010) as Abby, the vampire girl in New Mexico who devoured grown men for survival.
Originally a 1974 novel by Stephen King, the story of Carrie revolved around an abused child who realizes she has telekinetic powers that emerge whenever she is angry. Back in the days, Carrie was a pretty popular and scary film that did not have much to compete with in the film industry.
Today, Carrie is in competition with Horror movie lovers who have been exposed to extremes such as Saw and Hostel as well as remakes of Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The movie has no weekend competition besides a 133 minute film called 12 Years A Slave starring Brad Pitt, Cihiwetel Ejifor (from films like Salt as Peabody, American Gangster as Huey Lucas, Four Brothers as Victor Sweet) and Benedict Cumberbatch (from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and Directed by Steve McQueen. The film takes place in a pre-Civil War United States and surrounds a story of a man who was abducted into slavery. Although this movie is ‘horrible’ in every since of the word it does not fall into the category of ‘scary’. Movie-goers who are looking for an emotional and well-directed film are better off with 12 Years A Slave.
