One day after the Detroit Tigers season came to an end, far too soon for the third year in a row, and coming off a 5-2 loss by the Detroit Red Wings to the Phoenix Coyotes, the Detroit sports nation turns its attention today to the 4-2 first place Detroit Lions. They get their biggest test of the 2013 season today with the Cincinnati Bengals are in town. Without a doubt the Lions will need to play a more flawless game then we have seen them play thus far to beat a team that looks destined to go to the playoffs.
The good news here is there is a belief that the Lions can win this game. That has not always been the case for this team recently, and many sports pundits are picking the Lions to win. If they are to win and improve to 5-2 here is a few things that will need to happen:
- O line has to come up big- Geno Atkins is a force, this relatively young O line is gonna have to find a way to keep him out of Matthew Stafford's face. They are going to have to work hard against the Bengals front seven to open up lanes for Reggie Bush and Joique Bell. They are gonna have to up their game this week. The feeling is they are capable of doing just that and now they need to go out on the field and prove it.
- Offensive game plan- The Lions need to run the ball and get tough yards on the ground to extend drives and take a little pressure off the passing game. Stafford has got to be sharp from the first drive to the last, and Calvin Johnson needs to stretch the field. One of the other receivers on the roster has to step up and be the #2 guy. Brandon Pettigrew needs to be the players we have seen the last few weeks. He cannot drop balls today.
- Don't beat themselves- The lions have to be disciplined. They have to avoid the mistakes they tend to commit. They need to play a complete game. Make no mistake the Bengals are the toughest challenge this roster has come across and they can win, if they limit their own mistakes
