What's in a name? If it's going to be your business, and you want customers to remember you, then the name is very important!
The business name should reflect the brand of what is being sold in a memorable way. The business name differentiates your business from others; can and should peaks customer interest; and initiate further investigation through referrals and reviews.
My first business name was "Fine Finishing by Karen". I loved the name; I thought it was a good name, because my home decor sewing was fine and excellent work. But, when I meet others in business at the Chamber Network Meetings, they would ask, "did I finish furniture? Did I work with antiques?" One lawyer thought I said, I was involved with "fly fishing". After several of these interactions, I continued to passed out the 500 original business cards that I had printed, and contemplated what the new businesses name would be when it was time to order new cards.
- Choose a name that best suites the business.
- Example - Sue Sews. What does that tell a customer? Sue Sew what?
- Try a better name with more description.
- Embroidery Sewing by Sue, or better still and straight to the point Sue's Embroidery.
Once the name has been chosen, check to see if the business and domain name is available on the internet. If it's not available, go back and tweak the name a bit until a name works.
- Try to add keywords in the business and domain name. Sewing and Embroidery by Sue Smith, or SS Team Embroidery and Sewing.
- Ask friends and associates what they think? Poll perfect strangers.
Remember, if they can't say it or spell it, they won't use it, no matter how cute or witty!
