This is the final part of a 4 part series about Therapy Dogs, if you just joined us, here is the link to the first part What are Therapy dogs for children with autism.
It is true almost any breed can be a therapy dog, but not every dog can be a therapy dog, just like not every person is suitable for being a therapist. When choosing a dog for therapy there is a few things to look into first.
Temperament
Temperament test link. Most important is the dog’s level of patience, tolerance, more passive then aggressive, and how friendly is the dog. The right dog will love to be around other people and animals, and is very friendly. The puppy temperament test is an excellent tool when selecting a puppy. We used this method with our dog and he has turned out to be extremely patient, loving, tolerant and just the best friend a person can have.
Intelligence
Therapy dogs need to be able to learn a bit quicker than other dogs, they need to be able to be trained to complete a task and not be distracted. Dogs with the ability to stay focused are safer than those cannot since with service dogs we are relying on them being able to keep a child from wandering. Dogs that cannot be trained basic commands are not suitable for autism therapy.
