What to look for in a Health Coach





Holistic health coaches are a viable alternative to registered dieticians and other traditionally trained nutritionists.  Locating a competent counselor can definitely help you achieve your goals. Here are a few tips to help make your search a little easier.


    Adjustable custom tailored plans -. Regardless of your counselor’s nutritional approach, make sure that he / she really works with you to put your own unique “stamp” onto your plan. Although your guide will probably introduce you to new foods foreign to your diet, this plan is meant to help you develop a healthy way of eating that you can follow for life; you should feel relatively comfortable following this regimen. 


    Listen twice, speak once - A consultation with a health coach should require you to do most of the talking, not the other way around.  An effective counselor should be well versed in assessing and addressing your needs just by listening to you.  If the coach is especially adept, he / she should also be able to assess you needs through your body language (which speaks just as loudly as your vocals).


    Emphasis on “total wellness” – A complete health coaching program should emphasize every aspect of your life such as, nutrition, work career issues, social / personal relationships, self love and if you are religious, the spiritual realm. An imbalance in any of these arenas often leads to an imbalanced diet (emotional eating is a way that folks “create” equilibrium).


    Alternate views, solid facts - Alternative health counselors often have information not readily expressed in the mainstream.  However, he / she should be able to provide you with sufficient and competent information to back up any argument(s). If you feel the person doesn’t have adequate knowledge, don’t be afraid to ask and confirm the person’s credentials.


    Comfort level. – Lastly, but most importantly, make sure that you feel at ease talking with your counselor.  Did he / she give off a calm or tranquil sense of well being, or did they appear to be fidgety, impatient or in a rush? When you feel at ease with your counselor, everything else will naturally fall into place.
