The organizational challenge that I will discuss is with Apple Inc. While Apple has experienced a lot of success throughout the years they also have experienced some challenges in terms of their ethical standards and business practices. Within this article I will discuss how the leadership of Apple addressed these challenges, recommendations I would provide to leaders for avoiding similar challenges, and also provide suggestions to Apple for overcoming these challenged based on the research that I have conducted. It is my hope that through this article my audience will gain a better understanding of the ethical challenges that Apple experienced in the past, and what could be done to help the organization remove these hindrances. Apple will continue to experience success and an overwhelming amount of growth; eliminating their ethical issues will help them become even better.
According to www.apple.com Apple Inc. is an American based company that is extremely popular in the U.S. and also around the world. The stakeholders for Apple Inc are the following: their lenders; Apple employees, manufactures and the manufacture’s employees, software developers, customers, suppliers, and the music industry that supplies its products. I was able to go on Apple’s website to get their mission statement which “Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices with iPad.”
I would recommend future leaders to plan successfully by being constantly aware of pressing issues within their organization. When a problem comes up whether big or small make sure that some leader in the organization is addressing it. When these problems are not dealt with it can cause an infection neglect to go all throughout the organization. I would also suggest organizations to have an open door policy for regular employees within the organization to voice potential concerns about the organization, especially those issues that could damage the reputation of the company as a whole. If a company welcomes these leaders and regular employees to voice concerns than it will allow the organization to stand free of ethical issues.
Mone and London made an excellent point about strategic planning when they said: “Leaders start the strategic planning process by engaging in a discussion about what they think their core values are or should be. As a result, the core values will in part be culturally based and in part based on the leaders' beliefs and conception of the type of company they want to lead. For example, Western culture emphasizes the values of individualism, creativity, and equality (Hofstede, Hofstede, & Minkov, 2010; House, Hanges, Javidan, & Dorfman, 2004). Values emphasized in Eastern cultures include team-above self (collectivism), respect for authority, and delaying gratification.” (Mone, London, 2012)
The Apple Company is a for-profit organization that comes up with the designs for and creates products such as: iPod and iTunes, Mac laptop and desktop computers, the OS X operating system, and the revolutionary iPhone and iPad. They are constantly coming up with new ideas for marketing, distribution, and technology of their products. They sell these products all around the world, using their distributors to sell their products in different locations.
This particular article is about mistreated workers that produce products in China. The article was written and submitted for The Economist and told the story of Apple having unfair labor practices and using workers in poor countries to produce mass amounts of products. It also told of all the attacks that they receive along with other countries for having unfair labor practices in poor countries. Apple needs to carefully watch and monitor this kind of bad behavior on the part of their supervisors and managers across seas, since this negative display of ethics is creating problems for their name in general. This was good information to take away since the majority of people are unaware of the mistreatment these workers are receiving.
