What to expect when adopting a dog

Adopting a dog is a big decision. It is definately not one to be taken lightly.  A big concern is what to expect from a dog that you have adopted. Here are some tips for anyone who is interested in adopting a dog to help them pick a dog that matches their lifestyle.

1. Do not pick a dog just because it's cute. Do some research into their breed. Even if it is a mixed breed knowing just one of it's breeds can help you make a decision.  example a herding dog has tons of energy and needs alot of mental stimulation. A working breed has a protective streak. A gound dog can be more stubborn and easily distracted.

2. Do not judge a dog based on how the behave at the shelter. A shelter is an extremely stressful place. A dog is more likely to be timid and unsociable. Chances are you will not see how the dog truly is until it has lived with you for several weeks.

3. Give the dog some time to adjust. When you do pick a dog and bring them home there will be an adjustment period. This can be anywhere from a few weeks to several months it all depends on how much stability and guidance you give the dog.

4. Not all dogs come from abusive homes. Many dogs are simply unsocialzed and overeact to situations. With todays economy many pets are given up, not because the owner wants to, but because they have no choice. Their house may have been forclosed on and they themselves are homeless now.

5.It is not to eary to start training. Your new dog does not need a few weeks to get used to you before training. If anything it is much better for the dog and you to start training immediately. Dogs need stability and consistancy. Training will also build a bond between you and your dog.

6. Make sure to keep your schedule the same even if you took time off for the dog. If your dog gets used to you being around 24/7 early on they will be very confused when you go back to work. This can lead to seperation anxiety and destructive behaviors.
