What to expect from the PAX East Magic panel

Just like last year, a lot of big names in Magic are going to be in Boston at PAX East next weekend. There are many Magic-related events happening at the convention, including a bunch of tournaments and some unusual schwag being given out (Chandra's face... on a pin? Replicas of her goggles? And photos with her?!) but the real main attraction is the panel. This year it's to feature Brady Dommermuth, Dave Guskin, Scott Larabee, and Adam Colby. And they're certain to have big news about upcoming sets.

Last year, we saw a lot of information about Avacyn Restored as well as the announcement of Return to Ravnica (and, accidentally, Gatecrash). Here's what we should be getting this year:

  • The first Dragon's Maze official previews. This one's an utter no-brainer - what better place to kick off the rumor season in earnest? One of those spoilers is likely to be Ral Zarek in his first card form, given the amount of hype surrounding him as a character and his presence in the announcement artwork for the set. Another will probably be one card with a twist on a guild mechanic. The most obvious way to do that big twist is to put two on the same card.
  • The fall set announcement. It'd be an utter disappointment if we didn't get this sort of thing after last year's uproar-causing announcement. There might not be much of a stir, since "Friends" is likely to be on a new plane rather than returning to an old world for the third time in four blocks, but it's still a momentous occasion: The unofficial kickoff of the fall rumor season.
  • A third, special product to be announced. I can't say this for certain, but R&D seems to want to release a special-formats product every year, and Commander is far and away the most popular of formats. What I'm getting at is - This is when we find out about Commander 2.

Excited for PAX East? Planning on attending? Let me know in the comments.
