Not sure how it happens but we’ve heard hundreds of stories of how the washer or possibly the dryer ate one sock. Since they come in matching pairs a single sock to a set can hardly serve their intended purpose.
Now, not all socks disappear in the laundry room. Some wear out faster than others and the one with the holes are tossed. Then again, if both socks aren’t immediately put in the hamper after they’re taken off many mates can find their way under the bed only to be found on the day the floors are swept to the carpet is vacuumed.
Whatever the reason is for having single socks in your home they still can serve a purpose. Recycle them for other uses and you may not feel so bad that your favorite pair of socks can still provide you with assistance even if there is only one left to use.
Here are some ideas that are fun, interesting and useful ways to use a stray sock in your life:
The first idea that comes to mind is creating a sock or hand puppet for the kids. They will have hours of fun decorating the sock and expressing their imaginations with the stories they create by having a puppet show for the family to enjoy.
Instead of purchasing furniture mover pads use those stray socks under those pieces needed to be moved across tile, wood or linoleum flooring.
Keep a sock in every car in the glove compartment or the storage arm rest between the seats at all times. This is especially helpful when the windows fog up. You’ll have an instant car defogger and won’t have to wait to be on your way.
Older socks and those missing their mates make great dust cloths. Just slip you hand inside and you’ll get into many smaller spaces dust collects than a bulky rag. Place one over a broom stick or yard stick to create a duster for out of reach areas such as ceiling fans, tops of bookcases and to wipe any cobwebs out of the ceiling corners.
Don’t forget those beauty treatments. When hands or feet get very dry, lather them up with lotion and cover with a lonely sock. Wait 30 minutes before removing to get softened skin that makes it easy to exfoliate the dryness for pretty feet and hands.
