Carlisle is a small college town in Central Pennsylvania. With so many roads and major highways like the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 81 passing through the town, it makes a great stop on one’s way to New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, or DC. While it may seem quaint, there’s more to Carlisle than historic architecture and Dickinson College’s beautiful campus. Here are three things to do during a short stopover in the town:
1) See the Carlisle Historical Society
Carlisle residents deeply value their town’s history, and it shows when people visit the Carlisle Historical Society, right on High Street half a block from the square. The Historical Society carefully catalogs memories of bygone decades and centuries, and residents and visitors alike are free to browse the archives and photographs. The gift shop next door, History on High, is a great place to stop for postcards or a last minute gift. History is present all over downtown, in fact. Many houses are over a hundred years old, and historical markers detail events all the way back to the Revolutionary War era. Intrigued by the historical nature of the town, the couple decided to visit the Historical Society. Visitors will learn that Carlisle used to have gallows and that the courthouse was shelled during the Civil War.
2) Chow Down at Issei Noodle
Carlisle boasts a number of fantastic restaurants, especially for a town its size, but one standout with glowing reviews on Yelp is an Asian noodle shop across the street from the Historical Society called Issei Noodle. The Pork Gyoza appetizer with ponzu sauce is delicious. One of their most popular entrees is Chicken and Egg Don Buri, a rice bowl with chicken and egg covered in a delicious blend of Sake, Mirin, and Honey. For spicier tastes, the Tan Tan Ramen, a spicy noodle soup with pork and peanut oil, is sure to please.
3) Visit Dickinson College
Colleges always have something exciting going on, and Dickinson is no exception. The students engage actively with the Carlisle community, so visitors are sure to see flyers posted up around town advertising recitals, performances, open mics, and renowned speakers.
Carlisle is a cute little town with lots to do, and it makes a great destination for a daytrip or an enjoyable spot to visit while on the road.
