Upon arrival in Bangkok, it can be easy to become completely paralyzed when it comes to deciding what to do. With tens of thousands of shopping venues, hundreds of malls, thousands of nightclubs and bars and tens of thousands of restaurants, where should one go and what should one do on the weekend?
As a long-term resident of Bangkok, I can help. Here are a few things you should do for the weekend of January 18-20th, 2013.
Start your weekend by picking up a copy of Bangkok 101 -- the best magazine for what's going on in Bangkok, it's available at any bookstore in town. It's also small-sized, so easy to carry around and, at only 100 baht ($3.25), it's cheap.
Chatuchak Weekend Market -- The first thing you should do for this weekend, or any weekend for that matter, is to pay a visit to Chatuchak Weekend Market -- the world's biggest outdoor market. With more than 13,000 stalls, live music, great restaurants and some fabulous photo opportunities, if you miss hitting Chatuchak you haven't seen the real Bangkok.
Chatuchak opens on Friday nights for a few hours starting around 5pm and is open all day Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 7pm.
Siam Center -- One of Bangkok's main shopping malls, I wouldn't normally say it's the place to visit this weekend. But....Siam Center just re-opened last week after a six month renovation and it is absolutely stunning. Get there early though, as everyone in Bangkok wants to see the newest mall renovation. And take your camera, as it's well worth taking photos.
Siam Center is located right next to the skytrain at Siam Station.
The Thailand Mega Show - An absolutely massive trade fair at Impact Arena in Bangkok, The Thailand Mega Show has everything for sale -- clothing, furniture, Thai handicrafts, candles, bath and body products, books -- you name it, they sell it and at incredibly low prices.
It starts on Saturday the 19th and runs until January 27th at Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani. Don't even try to get there yourself, as it's in far north Bangkok. Just take a taxi.
Apoteka - There's a new bar opened on Sukhumvit Soi 11. Called Apoteka, it comes from the Thai word for 'apothecary' or 'pharmacy' and that's how it's designed but, ultra-cool and ultra-chic, of course.
Words don't do this kind of superb design justice, so I'm just going to give you their Facebook photo stream so you can check out the photos for yourself. Let's just say Apoteka is gorgeous, the drinks are wonderful, the bar tapas are great and, as they're the new kid on the block, the drinks specials are superb. It's also a wonderful place to meet a few locals.
Apoteka is located at 33/28 Sukhumvit Soi 11, Bangkok.
