Spring Break is either in full swing or on the horizon for most of us. This is a perfect time to take in a movie at the theaters or stay in and do a little catch up. Many of the top Oscar nominees or winners are already out on DVD or coming soon. “Dallas Buyers Club”, “12 Years a Slave”, and “Captain Phillips” are already available on DVD. See what other movies you might have missed and are now ready to be taken home.

1. “The Book Thief”: Adapted from the widely successful and critically acclaimed international bestseller written by Markus Zusak, this tells the story of a curious and stirring young girl who impacts the lives of all those around her. A drama that is both intriguing and inspirational, audiences see as this orphaned girl is sent to live with a new family in the midst of WWII. It stars Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson in this both moving and touching story that will leave you reaching for a tissue.

2. “Out of the Furnace”: This movie is a drama/thriller of a different kind, centering on the issues of family, justice and loyalty. A cast of A-listers heads and offers support for this movie including Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoë Saldana, and Sam Shepard. Bale stars as a blue collar, hardworking man who just can’t seem to get a break. His brother, played by Affleck, gets caught up in very shady dealings and winds up missing. Bale takes matters into his own hands and decides to get the justice that the legal system would never offer.

3. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”: This movie was released on 3/7 yet those who still have not had a chance to see this blockbuster sequel should use their free time to see it. Jennifer Lawrence commands her starring role in this sequel to “The Hunger Games” a unique story about a society that sends children to fight to the death, all to serve as a reminder of the governmental control. This movie serves as a propeller for the story mixing the action and dramatic moments, to equal or best its predecessor.

No matter what you are looking for drama, action, suspense, you are sure to find it on DVD this week. With your time away from school and studies, this would be a good time to catch up on those movies that everyone is talking about and join in the conversation. Be sure to keep an eye out on 3/18 “American Hustle” finally comes to DVD and despite it not bringing home an Oscar, next week you can decide if it was worth all the hype.
