What should the Cleveland Browns do with their first round draft pick?

There is a universal rule in football, new regimes mean new franchise QB’s. For the Browns they would need a new option at QB anyway, but Brady Quinn could stick around for one more year.

2010 looks to be a transition year for the Browns. New President Mike Holmgren will probably take the 2010 year to evaluate everything about the Browns. I mean a serious evaluation from the Head Coach down, and he just may wait to make bigger moves in 2011.

Deciding a strategy to rebuild this club will decide how the Browns conduct their 2010 draft. The safest route for them would be to select CB Joe Haden from Florida with the 7th overall pick. However, after a sub par NFL Scouting Combine that may no longer hold true.

Haden has a pretty poor combine. He ran a 4.57 in the forty yard dash, looked confuse in coverage, and showed poor technique. He may be able to rebound from that at his pro day, but that performance may scare teams picking in the top ten away from him.

Personally, my opinion of Haden has not changes, I still have him as the number one CB prospect in the 2010 Draft, and if the Browns are going to use 2010 as an evaluation year picking a shutdown corner at seven is the best option.

If they decide to give Quinn and Derek Anderson another shot, taking a OT at seven would also make a lot of sense. When they select at seven the only OT off the board should be Russell Okung, meaning they could pick Bryan Bulaga or Trent Williams to plug a hole in their Offensive line. While these players mostly played on the left side, the Browns could use them to fill their need for a RT.

The other option for the Browns would be to select a DE. They have a need for this position, and in most mock drafts none have been selected by this point in the draft. That means, they would have their pick of Derrick Morgan, Carlos Dunlap, or even Everson Griffen. This might be a bit of reach for a DE at seven, but no one ever really knows.
