Many first time parents have no idea what to put on their registry.  There are some items that are must-haves and some items that are just really nice to have.

The must haves are:

  1. clothing - a few oneises, a few sleepers, few pairs of socks, a couple of hats
  2. bottles - Even if you are breastfeeding, you might need some for when you pump or for backup.
  3. formula if you are not going to breastfeed
  4. some kind of baby bath or pillow for bathing
  5. crib with crib sheet or a bassinet
  6. hooded towel, washcloths and baby soap
  7. burp cloths - Cloth diapers are the best because they can be used for everything!
  8. first aid kit, including baby nail clippers and thermometer
  9. diapers, wipes and diaper rash lotion - Beadreaux's Butt Paste is great.
  10. Car Seat - Newborns must have one of these for the car.  They must be the carrier type and have to be placed in the back seat, facing backwards, until they reach a certain age and weight.

Here are some items that make your life a lot easier:

  1. Diaper Champ - The champ is great because you can use regular trash bags with it.  It really does help with the smell.
  2. Baby monitors to listen to baby when you're away from the nursery
  3. Ultimate crib sheets - These absorb leaks and slobber.  In the middle of the night, you can change this instead of the sheet.  It's great to have two for this purpose.
  4. Changing table with pad and pad cover
  5. SwaddleMe wrap - Some babies sleep easier with these because it supposedly makes them feel like they're still in the womb.
  6. Play yard - This is a portable crib for when you travel.  They can play in it or sleep in it.
  7. Activity mat - a place for baby to lay and play.
  8. High chair - You won't need one of these right away but if you need more items on your registry, go ahead and add it.
  9. Bottle warmer and or bottle sanitizer - Some parents love these.
  10. Glider or rocking chair - great for the nursery!
  11. Stroller - There are a zillion different kinds out there.  The travel systems are nice because they hold the car seat carrier when they are young.  Later, the seat fold down and they can sit in it.  They are also jogging strollers, lightweight strollers and strollers that hold bassinet type carriers.
  12. Bouncy seat - They are put on the floor and baby to lay in.  Some of them vibrate (babies love this!) and have music.
  13. Swing - Again, another way to entertain baby.  Swings come in every size, type and color.
  14. Boppy pillow or other pillow - These are nice to have to put baby on while you feed them or just hold them.
  15. Baby carrier - These come in front, hip, sling or wrap varieties.  They are great to allowing you to use both arms while holding baby..
  16. Exersaucer - Here's yet another way to entertain baby.  They can begin using these once baby can hold her head up.
  17. Mobile and/or crib mirror for crib entertainment
  18. Tide Free detergent - Dreft still has some perfumes in it.
  19. Floppy seat for highchairs and shopping carts
  20. Diaper bag to hold everything (and there will be a lot of stuff!)
  21. Bumbo seat - Some kids like these to learn to sit up.
  22. Crib bumpers, crib skirt, nursery decorations and additional nursery furniture
  23. Breastpump - Some moms cannot live without theirs.
  24. Pacifiers - Some parents have strong feelings about these, so make up your own mind.
  25. Toys, toys and more toys, including bath toys and a toy bar for the stroller or car carrier

You really could go crazy with your baby registry but this is a great starting point to figure out what you must have after the birth.
