The Larrabee Foundation has two finalists for its Musicology Grant. Hugh Simon (Kenneth Mars) and Howard Bannister (Ryan O'Neal) were the two respected men each for different findings in the field of Musicology. Howard had found a way for prehistoric man to make music by using igneous rocks.
Now Howard had come to San Fransisco with his fiance Eunice Burns (Madeline Kahn). Now Eunice was a handful when she was back at home but taking her to a different city, well that was just cruel to Howard.
It gets better when Howard runs into a young lady by the name of Judy Maxwell (Barbra Streisand). You see Judy was a die hard college student until the school would kick her out but she would move onto another.
Now Howard would simply try and get away from Judy but she had become glued to him and was not going to leave him be. This would drive Eunice up the wall and she would have a headache. She would have many headaches. Fred Larrabee (Austin Pendleton), the head of the foundation, would make his way around to the finalists and you could see he kind of had a thing for Judy. Which if you think about it Howard had only met her and Larrabee thought they were together.
What's makes this even funnier is that in the same hotel is a woman with a bag of jewels and that's right Howard's rocks were in the same kind of bag. So the people who were trying to get the jewels would get Howard's bag and vice versa. In other this slap stick comedy at it's best.
I have to say out of all the Streisand movie's this is by far my favorite. She does good work and so does Ryan O'Neal.
Director Peter Bogdanovich has a blast with this one and if he didn't he should have. The crew is great and they should have been laughing all the way to the bank. This is one those movies that when all the dust settles and your leaving the room you feel good. You have just spent some laughing all over yourself and sometimes we just need that. So enjoy this one.
