More than 800 years ago, vintners blended and stored their most coveted concoctions in a mysterious place call “Apotheca.”
The mystery continues, according to Apothic winemaker Boyd Morrison.
“I like wine with a bit of intrigue,” he said. “Dramatic flavors that lure you in, but keep you guessing. I might look to a different vineyard or experiment with a new variety to give our signature bold flavors a taste of the unexpected.”
Three recent releases – Apothic White, Apothic Red and Apothic Dark – bring this philosophy to life. All are modestly priced at $13.99.
Apothic White is a blend of chardonnay, pinot grigio and Riesling. It has a strong start with lemon and pineapple aromas with peach and apricot flavors. Its appealing bright notes make it the perfect accompaniment to light foods.
Boasting a blend of zinfandel, syrah, merlot and cabernet sauvignon, Apothic Red explodes with jammy red notes as each varietal comes center stage. The zinfandel contributes bold, dark fruit flavors flattered by the soft mouthfeel of merlot. Syrah adds smooth blueberry flavors and the cabernet sauvignon conveys ripe fruit and solid structure.
In introducing Apothetic 2012 Dark, Morrison said, “There’s a romance in darkness. It draws our curiosity and beckons a desire to taste the unknown.”
This blend is outstanding so grab a couple of bottles before the limited release disappears like a whisper of smoke on a blustery winter’s night. Sippers will be mesmerized by the dark fruit flavors of blueberry and blackberry with luxurious offerings of coffee, dark chocolate and oak.
