The holiday season is upon us. Your family and kids start pestering you to take them out. However, personally you are tired with the same old routine of shopping, standing in line for Santa Claus in shopping complexes and all the commercial activities associated with this period. You wonder if there is any way to have fun during the holiday season. The answer is a loud and booming Yes!! You see, there is a city, which is just a few hours away by road that allows you to enjoy the holiday season to the fullest.
I am referring to Wilmington, Delaware. Now you may wonder what I am talking about. Well, in order to help families enjoy the true spirit of the holiday season, there are a number of events held in the city throughout the months of November and December.
Wilmington, being the biggest city in Delaware, hosts a number of different programs for families and individuals throughout the year. However, today I will focus on four programs that capture the holiday spirit in its entirety.
The Festival of Yuletide
The first event we will look at is called the Yuletide Festival. This event is held at the Winterthur museum every year from November 23 to January 5. This is a daily event, which runs from 10 am in the morning to 5 pm in the evening. Entry is free to the members of Winterthur. However, normal visitors will have to pay 20 USD for adults and 5 USD for kids from ages two to eleven. This tour allows you to revisit the sights and sounds of Christmas. You can also taste the various food items made for the occasion and complete the tour by taking part in the events and performances organized.
Traditional Swedish Christmas
The second event is the traditional Swedish Christmas celebrations. This event is held from December 4 to December 28 at 606 Church Street. This runs every day from 10 am to 6 pm. This allows you to witness Christmas as it is held in Sweden. You also get to see the traditional decorations and craftsmanship of the Swedes. If you have chosen Sweden for your Christmas holiday destination you can check out the latest suggestions for all inclusive holidays from Startour (in Danish all inclusive rejser fra Startour) on this web page.
Green Field Christmas Tree
The third event captures the spirit of Christmas in its entirety. This is held in the Green Field Lake Park in Wilmington. People come from the city and other locations to witness the lighting of the Christmas tree. This is followed by the distribution of gifts to children as well as hot and cold drinks and snacks being served to everyone. Finally, the festivities end with the screening of “A Christmas Story” in the amphitheatre.
Wilmington Holiday Parade
Who doesn’t love a parade? What if the parade involved floats, entertainers and marching bands all based on the holiday themes. This is the crux of the Annual Wilmington Holiday Parade. This parade is in its eleventh year and it involves all the counties of the state of Delaware. In fact, the event is so big that the entire city of Wilmington is shut down for this event. You and your kids will enjoy all the festivities and the entertainment on offer during the parade.
So the next time you want to recapture the spirit of the holidays, just head down over to Wilmington, Delaware. What are your favorite memories connected with the holidays?
