As temperatures have dipped this past week, it is only a matter of time when fall makes its glorious return to the South Carolina Upstate. With that means a bevy of racing options to choose from over the next several months. Here’s what is on tap around Greenville for the weekend of September 20-22.
BMW 2 Mile Classic
When: Friday, September 20, 2013 6:30p.m.
Where: BMW Performance Center (1155 Highway 101 S Greer, SC 29651)
The annual road race returns for its 14th edition at Greer’s BMW Performance Center. For most of the year, the testing center for the automaker’s mid-size luxury vehicles is closed to the public. But on one Friday night each September, the grounds are used for one of the area’s more unique road racing venues. Last year, local resident, Josh Cashman, established an event record when he blazed through the two mile track in 9:33 (4:46 pace). The BMW Classic is a corporate shield race and a Run In Running Series event with the Greenville Track Club. The course is one of only three South Carolina road racing events that is run at the rare and underrated two mile distance. Relatively flat, the course does contain a brief hill around the 1.5 mile mark. Participants can also sign up for “Hot Laps” and experience the rush of a BMW performance vehicle!
Online registration is open until the end of Thursday, September 19 at http://go-greenevents.com/event/id/1487 ($16.25/without shirt; $20 on race day)
Half-Moon Outfitters Moonshiner Night 5K Trail Race
When: Friday, September 20, 2013 8:00p.m.
Where: Paris Mountain State Park (2401 State Park Rd Greenville, SC 29609)
Yes, you read that correctly. A night 5K trail race. On Friday night, runners will be taking on the highly technical trails of Paris Mountain with the accompaniment of a visible light source. Half-Moon Outfitters is offering a half-off Black Diamond Cosmo Headlamp for $15 to participants in the race. The gear can be purchased when registering for the race and will appear in the race packet (batteries are included). Proceeds from the race will be funneled into the Paris Mountain State Park Camp Buckhorn Restoration Project. Buckhorn was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the mid-1930s and served as a camp for disadvantaged youth in the Greenville area. Generating money for the project has been no easy feat, but with over 300 participants already registered for the 5K trail race, funding for the site-which has been delayed over the past year-could get a much needed boost. In 2012, Greenville’s Jonathan Allen covered the 5K course in 18:46 and is scheduled to compete in this year’s event. Deborah Nigh of Greer was the overall female winner in a time of 22:09.
Race organizers are encouraging runners to carpool to the event as parking is limited at Paris Mountain.
Online registration is open through midnight on Friday, September 20 at http://go-greenevents.com/event/id/1345 ($30)
The TROAD 5K Trail and 8K Road Run
When: Saturday, September 21, 2013 8:30a.m.
What’s on tap for Greenville running
Where: Roper Mountain Science Center (402 Roper Mountain Road Greenville, SC 29615)
TROAD is a word blend which combines a “trail” and “road” race event.
The massive TROAD statues that are given to the overall winners, along with other door prizes, have made the race duo a popular event in the Upstate since its inception in 2011. The 5K is a closed course race which meanders through the woods and farmland of the Roper Mountain Science Center and the nearby Greenville Water trails. The new 8K course is run along the public roads of the facility and even ventures along some of the property’s wooded paved pathways. Both the 5K trail and 8K road race courses feature a long downhill finish which portends some fast times this weekend. The runs benefit the science programs at the Roper Mountain Science Center and the Greenville County School District’s center for science education. Following the duo races, a free .5 mile Kids Run will be held at 9:30a.m. on The Farm at Roper Mountain Science Center.
The TROAD is offering a special for runners who participate in either the BMW 2 Mile Classic or the 5K Moonshiner on Friday. Bring your race bib to the event and you will receive $10 off your entry for either the 5K trail run or 8K road race.
Online registration will close at the end of Thursday with early packet pickup available from 3:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. at South Carolina Blue at 1025 Woodruff Road, Suite A 105, next to Cheddars Restaurant on Friday. Register at http://go-greenevents.com/event/id/1417
