As promised, we’re highlighting some of the highlights of the upcoming season at the Vail Resorts: Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Vail. Beaver Creek is a great place to start. Not only is it first alphabetically, but it’s certainly one of our favorites.
Though this series is focused on ski area improvements and initiatives for the coming season, we think the fact that Beaver Creek is hosting men’s and ladies’ World Cup skiing in the run-up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia is certainly noteworthy. Beaver Creek will also host the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.
You can catch the World Cup action Nov. 27 through Dec., as America’s top skiers take on Birds of Prey for the final World Cup event in the U.S. before the Olympics. Over those two weeks there will also be live music, public bib draws, autograph signing sessions, and more. For more info and details, go to www.bcworldcup.com or www.beavercreek.com.
New Talons Restaurant
Beaver Creek is finishing up construction a new on-mountain restaurant called Talons, which you can find at the confluence of Larkspur Bowl, Grouse Mountain and Birds of Prey, and is replacing Red Tail Camp.
Talons more than doubles previous capacity with 17,000 square feet, 500 indoor seats on two levels, and 250 outdoor seats. The European-inspired menu will feature gourmet dining options such as the Talons Kasseler Rippchen Casserole (shaved smoked pork loin, sauerkraut, home fries, baked apples) and Colorado Lamb Burger as well as tossed to order salads, homemade soups, carved meats, rustic thin pizzas and artisan breads served in an upscale cafeteria setting.
There will also be an indoor/outdoor bar and an outdoor smokehouse. The architecture pays homage to the early era of Beaver Creek with a nostalgic barn exterior and post and beam construction. Originally constructed in 1997, the new building is situated lower down the hill, offering easier access to ski and board into.
Talons is expected to open at the start of the 2013-2014 ski season and it also will serve as the press center for the 2013 Birds of Prey World Cup events as well as the 2015 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships.
Beaver Creek has added a new escalator located in the heart of the village above the ice rink. An existing series of escalators already serves skiers and riders in the main artery of the village.
To help you reach snow faster the new escalator will be located between the ice rink and the snow surface adjacent to the Children’s Ski & Snowboard School and near the Buckaroo Gondola. It will be operating at the start of the 2013-2014 ski season.
