You're fortunate enough to have a three-day weekend. You've been eyeing snow totals for the last week and it's snowed almost more than you can imagine since January 8. You're yearning to go skiing.

With Monday's celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr., it's the perfect time to hit the slopes. The banks are closed, there's no mail, and plenty of people get or take MLK Day off to score those three days out of the office. At Colorado's Copper Mountain, the holiday weekend is the perfect time to ski in the best conditions of the year and check out the resort's WinterBike and Safety Fest happening January 18 to 20.

The 3rd annual WinterBike kicked off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, from Center Village. The one-of-a-kind race takes mountain bikers screaming around the resort and on the mountain for a 10-mile race through snowy obstacles. It's the first race in the Leadville Winter Mountain Bike Series. Think spraying snow and very fat fires at this event. Oh, and fireworks: The finish line celebration includes a fireworks show in Burning Stones Plaza.

While January has been given the titles of Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month, it's also been named the National Ski Areas Association National Safety Awareness Month. At Copper, Safety Fest takes over Burning Stones Plaza in Center Village from January 18 to 20, providing demonstrations and educational materials. National Ski Patrol, the U.S. Forest Service, Summit County Rescue Group, Woodward at Copper and others are part of Safety Fest and will have information on backcountry access, National forest access, safety initiatives happening at Copper Mountain. You'll find avalanche dog demonstrations at the base and free hot cocoa at Patrol Headquarters an Timberline Patrol Hut. More incentives for skiers to drop by: Skiers can sign up to shadow Copper's Ski Patrol when they sweep the mountain at 4 p.m., and there are prize drawings at 1:30 p.m. that include lodging packages, a Copper season pass for next season and a Tucker Mountain snowcat trip.

Check out Copper's website for more details about the events happening at the resort and snow conditions.
