The best way for me to describe what energy medicine is would be to do this exercise: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and planted firmly in the ground with knees slightly bent; Take a deep breath in and exhale slowly; While still breathing, rub your hands briskly for several seconds to create friction; When you stop, hold your hands facing each other about 6-10 inches apart and notice what you feel (if you don't quite feel it sometimes it helps to just bounce your hands softly closer and further and feel the energy that way).
That is energy.
Energy Medicine uses that force, which is part of us, part of nature, part of everything in our environment, to gain balance within our body. Energy flows in, through and all around us. When we encounter different circumstances and experiences in our life, energy can get out of whack. Pain is a good example as it is usually a sign of blocked energy.
A great way to start working with your own energies is simply to practice conscious breathing. Energy needs and wants to move - to flow. Breathing helps to move it through it's natural passages within our body. Breathing is also one of the primary ways our body detoxifies. So while practicing slow, conscious breathing, you can be bringing in new, fresh oxygen and life force energy while eliminating stale and toxic energy.
There are many energy systems within the body. Some of the more familiar ones you may have heard of are as follows:
Chakras - the primary system used in Reiki
Meridians - the primary system used in Acupuncture
Aura - one of the most scientifically studied of the human energy systems in recent years
Other systems addressed in Energy Medicine include Radiant Circuits, Electrics, Triple Warmer, Basic Grid, The Five Rhythms and the Celtic Weave.
By assessing these systems and comparing their strength and balance to symptoms and concerns that people may have, we can determine how to help support our body's natural healing capacity. This is no way to say that this is a replacement for medical attention and treatment. Like all other alternative healing modalities, it is a way to support the body while it goes through the healing process.
In addition, by understanding the body's energies, you can practice certain exercises to help keep them in balance and help build your immunity to undesired conditions to begin with.
