March has pretty much come in like the proverbial lion. If you were up in the high country today with all the snow falling, followed by the I-70 follies that closed it down for a bit today, you know what we mean.
Copper Mountain is benefitting from the lion-like snow marking the early part of the month and should be fantastic for skiing and riding all month long. Plus, Copper Mountain has a lot going on in March, event-wise, that you might want to know about. Here’s a rundown…
March 8-10, Copper Uncorked: Called a “working man's wine festival,” Copper Uncorked features affordable wines and not-so-traditional food pairings: Chiantis and NY-style pizza slices; Zinfandels and smoky barbecue wings; and Champagne (brunch) and gourmet burritos.
March 16, Eenie Weenie Bikini Contest and O’Fuego, St. Patrick’s Day: In celebration of Copper Mountain’s 40th Anniversary season, the Eenie Weenie Bikini Contest returns just in time for spring break in the high country. This on-snow bikini contest debuted at Copper Mountain in 1986 and was featured in Rolling Stone magazine and Good Morning America. Now, over 25 years later, it’s back with more flair and coincides with Copper Mountain’s Saint Paddy’s Day O’Fuego celebration. At 4 p.m., contestants ski or snowboard from the base of the 22 ft. Main Vain Superpipe into Burning Stones Plaza at Copper’s Center Village in bikinis (or swimwear for the fellas) of all shapes and sizes. Jack’s Slopeside Grill & Bar is the place to be with St. Patrick’s Day specials, green beer, music and the best view for the show. For the last En Fuego of the season, Copper is mixing in the luck of the Irish. The free, family-friendly festivities include DJ Leprechaun Landry, a Celtic Cosmic Fire performance, fire pits, green beer, and green fireworks over West Lake. O’Fuego also marks Copper’s last Woodward Rail Session of the season under the lights. Woodward Rail Session from 5-6 p.m.; green fireworks over West Lake at 7 p.m.
March 29 through April 10, 2013 USASA Nationals: The USASA National Championships is the largest snowboard and freeskiing event on earth, according to Copper Mountain. The top regional athletes are invited to compete in Copper Mountain where national champions in each discipline and category will be crowned. For more information, visit www.usasa.org.
March 31, Easter at Copper Mountain: Youngsters 7-11 years old are invited to participate in the annual Center Village Egg Hunt at 10 a.m. featuring a whopping 50,000 eggs. Big “kids” can hunt for special "Copper Eggs" hidden on the mountain, while little bitty peeps have their very own hunt around Copper's Climbing Wall at 11 a.m. The event also features photo ops with the Easter Bunny at West Lake in Center Village, tons of egg-cellent prizes, and a noon egg decorating party with all of the leftover treasure from the hunts.
