The coming year for outdoor types in the greater Sacramento area should prove to be not only full but varied, with something for everyone.
Mark your calendars now, and you increase your chances of showing up at your chosen event on the right day.
One of the biggies this year is the North American Handmade Bicycle Show. From March 2d to the 4th some of the uber coolest bikes, handmade ones, will be gathered, with their builders, at the Sacramento Convention Center.
The show is in it's eight year. So far, it has been held in a different city each year. Expect to see an extensive rack of great bikes, meet the builders, and mingle with other cyclistes. The cutting edge in cycling will be here. The exhibitor list is truly long. The vendor pool of associated gear should be pretty interesting too, increasing your opportunity for bike related swag.
Hangtown Motocross will covene at Prarie City State Vehicular Rec Area on May 19. It's a wild ride here, motorized as it can be. Bring ear phones if this is your thing. Expect around 30,000 other moto fans to be there with you.
Whole Earth Festival in Davis, May 4th to the 6th. Not exactly a sports type of event, but frisbees will be thrown, hacky sacks hacked, and so on. It is a fine outdoor adventure that probably doesn't include sweating.
The Death Ride, aka the Tour of the California Alps, will take place on July 14. Find a place along the route, from Markleeville to Hope Valley, up to Carson Pass, to see cyclists of all shapes and sizes on road bikes and mountain bikes attempt to conquer 5 mountain passes and 30,000 feet of verticle climbs in one, long, long day on the road. This is about the tee shirt and bragging rights. Contact them early if you think you want to ride this monster.
Eppies Great Race follows the Death Ride. It will be held on July 21. Men and women, individually and in teams, will run, bike, and kayak along the American River Parkway. The Great Race is a fun filled community affair with loads of opportunities to participate, volunteer, or spectate in a beautiful urban wildland.
Sam Pickering Pick, a fellow Examiner writer, has highlighted 4 dates for what is called Savage Sprints: January 8th, January 22nd, February 5th and February 19th. These take place at Hot Italian in Sacramento. It sounds like a good time, complete with good pizza. Read his article here.
Your local bike shop is always a good place to check for rides, training, help, and club events. Take your calendar with you.
These are enough to get started. More to come later, including marathons, centuries, bike festivals, workshops, and more. Stay tuned.
