A pondless waterfall is exactly what the words say. It is a way to have the beauty and sound of splashing water in a designed environment without the high upkeep of a pond.
Ponds are beautiful but require regular care. Plants need cleaning, pruning and dividing. Fish need clean, balanced water, food and circulating, oxygenated water. Stagnant water outdoors will encourage mosquitoes to breed. Indoor ponds have a set of problems all their own. In short, although ponds are beautiful and make riveting focal points they are a lot of work to maintain.
For an easier solution, consider building a pondless waterfall. It will deliver the sound and motion of a waterfall without the maintenance of a pond.
The concept in building a pondless waterfall is basically the same as creating a fountain. The easiest way is to have a tub of water set up beneath the ground line. A submersible pump resting on the bottom of the tub pulls water up a pipe and through or over whatever décor you are using as the waterfall object. Water then spills out of the pipe, over the rocks, sculpture or other base material, and filters down through a surface cover of permeable material. Stones, rocks or pavers placed to cover a wire grid make a good permeable layer and will keep the water in the tub below free from debris. The permeable layer also slows evaporation and denies mosquitoes a water surface to use for laying eggs. The water from the top of the spill area pours through the permeable covering and back into the tub, recycled through the waterfall over and over. Make sure whatever cover material you use over your tub can be removed easily enough to service or replace the pump when necessary.
Why you would want a pondless waterfall? There are plenty of reasons. This is a low cost, low maintenance way to have a water feature that can make the difference between a ho-hum-looking garden and a rivetingly beautiful landscape. A pondless waterfall can turn an ordinary indoor room into an exciting environment. The sound of water adds psychological cooling in the heat of summer and calms the nerves at any time of year. Outdoors, water features help attract and care for local wildlife. And indoors, a pondless waterfall can offer 'white noise' to mask the sound of machinery, noisy neighbors or other sounds you may want to block.
A pondless waterfall is a way you can design your own water feature. It is a cross between a fountain and a waterfall that would normally be recycled with a pond. You can build it as large or small as you want. You can run a pondless waterfall outdoors year round where temperatures don’t freeze. Or you can build one indoors in any room as a conversation piece. A pondless waterfall can make a garden, patio, courtyard or indoor room into a magical place to enjoy.
