On the surface, Mary Tyler Moore and Paula Deen have nothing in common. Slender, graceful, "turning the world on with her smile," Mary Tyler Moore always is in control of herself. Plump and proud of her skill with fattening foods, Paula Deen can turn your tastebuds on with her ability to stuff pounds of butter into every dish.
And yet: both women must deal with diabetes. The difference: Mary manages her diabetes carefully and openly. Paula seems to want to hide it from not just the public but herself. For example, Dr. Oz recently said he has a taped episode with Paula Deen that he may never air, because he feels she's not ready to face her health condition.
What Paula can learn from Mary: be honest about your condition with yourself and others. Learn to manage your diabetes - Mary, for example, told a USA Today reporter that she pre-plans each meal to consider what will best control her condition and drinks orange juice after working out to keep her blood sugar level stable.
