What Madonna and parents of the college-bound share

If you are helping your college-bound teen form a college list and take a college tour then you and Madonna share something in common: college prep activities. The Material Girl and 17 year old daughter Lourdes Leon visited the campus of the University of Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 20 according to SheKnows Entertainment.

Parent role in the college process

It is up to students to take the lead to attain their college dreams and parents can help them. By forming a parent-student team, the family can divvy up college prep activities and brainstorm ideas. Parents can provide emotional and financial support throughout the entire college process.

Madonna’s parent contribution

So far, Madonna has shared her ideas for colleges that best fit her daughter’s needs and interests. “She is a Michigan native and attended the university for a short time before deciding to follow her dreams and move to New York. And she has obviously thought about her daughter's college path,” SheKnows reports.

Leon is a New York performing arts high school student who recently was cast in her school’s production of Grease. Exploring colleges that offer a great education and majors such as musical theatre would make sense.

The mother-daughter team went to Ann Arbor for a tour of the University of Michigan, and had a meeting in the music deans office.

College visits

Parents can help plan a college tour by turning it into a collegecation. Families can map out the trip like a vacation, noting area attractions, learning about the community and researching what the college offers visitors. In addition to tours, many schools have information sessions and opportunities for shadowing a student, sitting in on a class, meeting with a professor, and/or spending an overnight in the dorm.

Like Madonna, parents may accompany their student on a campus visit. Brainstorm questions for the student to ask the tour guide, current students, professors, college admission staff and others. That way, parents can keep a low profile while empowering their child to show the college they are ready, willing and able to take the lead in the college process.
