Do you know where the origin of New Years’ Day came from? It also came from Paganism. God set the first month of the year on His sacred calendar to begin in March or April, around Passover time, so January 1st is not God’s New Year. (Exodus 12:2; Deuteronomy 16:1). And it also begins at sunset, not in the middle of the night! And although it is not wrong to watch a football game or watch the Rose Bowl Parade or even have fun on that day, we just need to remember that what we do must always please God.
As most everyone knows, New Year’s Eve is too often treated as an excuse or justification to drink too much and lowering moral standards. It is also one of the most dangerous times of the year because of drunk driving and other deadly games people play such as playing with guns or firecrackers.
We all recognize that we go by the modern day calendar so we must also plan accordingly. Many people made New Year’s Resolutions or goals at the beginning of 2011 but at the end of the year how many accomplished or achieved them? What did you achieve in 2011?
How about instead of making a New Year’s resolution, make daily resolutions or a daily goal! Each day have a plan of what you want to accomplish that day. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
Most of the time resolutions are made for self improvement which is very good.
For example:
- Resolve or make it a goal to treat others as we would like to be treated
- How about working on a certain fault or trait that we may have that we don’t like in ourselves, such as maybe we tend to speak before we think, so we should resolve to put our hand over our mouth and think before we answer someone. Maybe we tend to judge others and correct them for something that isn’t any of our business.
- Or maybe we gossip or talk too much. Maybe we tend to pass on hearsay instead of getting the facts on something. Social media is so popular now and so many tend to write or text something on their smart phones or computers that maybe shouldn’t be said or written!
All throughout the day, focus on that one thing that we want to overcome and continue to work on it until it has been successfully eradicated from our lives! It usually takes about three weeks to make or break a habit. Then we can go on to the next one!
The best resolution is the best goal!
- Resolving to study the Bible more each and every day is the best goal to set for yourself! God's Word has to be drunk in daily in order for it to become a part of our daily lives. The Bible is a Living Book and every time you read it you understand more!
- Act 17:11:“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”
- James 1:21: “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”(NKJ)
Hope your 2012 goals are successful!
