What is type 2 diabetes? Symptoms and causes of diabetes mellitus type 2 (Video)

Type 2 diabetes is known by several names: Diabetes mellitus type 2, noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, NIDDM, adult-onset diabetes. The disease is a metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose and insulin resistance.

The disease is accompanied by symptoms including thirst, frequent urination, and constant hunger.

Type 2 diabetes is caused by a combination of lifestyle and genetic factors. It tends to run in families and obesity is considered to be the primary cause of the disease. In fact, as obesity has increased over the past 50 years so has the percentage of people with Type 2 diabetes. Increased fat in the body can lead to insulin resistance, where cells do not respond adequately to normal levels of insulin.

Other factors that can contribute to Type 2 diabetes include lack of physical activity, poor diet, stress, and lack of sleep.

It is considered a chronic disease and is believed to lower life expectancy by an average of ten years.
