Pirating movies online is as popular as pirating songs, but it hurts the film industry a lot more. Yes, you read that right. The party-raging film that grossed only $101 million at the worldwide box office claims the top spot with 8.72 million downloads, according to Torrent Freak. After that is Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Dark Knight Rises with 8.5 and 8.23 million downloads, respectively.
Project X ,which was largely promoted through social media and word of mouth earlier this year, is loosely based off of an Australian party that went south a few years back. It resulted in wild mayhem and thousands of dollars in damage.
Oddly enough, if everyone who downloaded the film this year bought it instead, the sum will accumulate to more than the actual box office total.
