What is the iPhone Home button? Tips for the iPhone Home button

The iPhone 3GS

The iPhone Home button is the button at the bottom center of the iPhone. The button is used to return to the main iPhone screen, but it can also be used to activate voice control or to quick launch select programs.

Activating Voice Controls

To activate voice controls, simply hold down the home button for several seconds until the display changes to the voice control screen. At this point, you are ready to give the iPhone a voice command.

How to set up the iPhone Home quick application launch

Setting up the iPhone Home button lets you launch certain applications like accessing the Search functionality or launching into your phone favorites simply by pressing the iPhone Home button twice in a row. Personally, I like it set on Camera so I can snap off a quick shot without hunting for the icon.

Here's how to setup the iPhone Home button:

  • Tap the Settings icon.
  • Tap General to go to the general settings tab.
  • Scroll down until you see Home and tap it.
  • Choose whichever default you want for double-clicking the iPhone Home button.
