What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy titles the process of seeking mental health with the guidance of a professional clinician. Most often the term catches people off guard as soon as the word psycho rolls off the tongue, but no fear is needed. Psychotherapy originates from a deep focus on assisting anyone who seeks compassionate counsel from a professional who wants to provide a safe environment of healing and growth.

As the field of psychology has enlarged the understanding of human nature, many onlookers remain aloof to the real meaning of many scientific and psychological words such as psychotherapy. Psyche is translated as the breath, soul, or spirit within each person. Variations of therapie describe medical treatment or attention. Truly, psychotherapy is the process of seeking medically based treatment for the wellness of the mind or being.

Historic perceptions of integrating medicine and science with the spiritual or non-tangible part of human nature have caused cultural waves since the beginning of time. Many psychotherapists, such as Freud, often discredited much of the spiritual realm describing it as a crutch in the pursuit of real human potential. Likewise with the opposing opinions, psychology focuses too much on the self and ignores the true spiritual focus of the human existence. Both perceptions have valid ideas but the purpose of psychotherapy is discredited throughout the heated arguments.

The science behind psychology and psychotherapy seeks to provide professional judgment and treatment to assist in the development of the client’s self-awareness and personal skills. The intention of psychotherapy is not to force change or imprint the therapist’s opinions but rather partner with the client, highlighting his or her strengths and offering an empathic relationship.
