What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a “hormonal disorder” involving “multiple organ systems within the body believed to be fundamentally caused by insensitivity to the hormone insulin” (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association website).  Prevalent symptoms of PCOS include:

  • Irregular/no periods
  • Irregular ovulation
  • Acne
  • Excessive facial and body hair
  • Thinning hair on scalp
  • Accumulation of unruptured follicles or cysts in the ovaries
  • Obesity/inability to lose weight
  • Pain in the lower abdomen/pelvis

PCOS is one of the most common causes of infertility because of how it impacts a female’s monthly cycle by delaying or preventing ovulation (causing an anovulatory cycle).  Delayed ovulation or anovulatory cycles make it difficult (or impossible) to determine when ovulation will occur and when a woman’s fertile time is.  A majority of diagnoses occur when a woman is having difficulty trying to conceive and an ultrasound and other tests (including blood work) are performed to determine the possible causes of difficulties in trying to conceive.

Fortunately, there are a few treatments available for the treatment of PCOS- the most prevalent is lifestyle modification to help restore hormonal balance, ability to handle insulin, and reduce symptoms related to PCOS.  Modifications include weight loss, regular exercise, and a modified diet focused on healthy food choices.  Other treatments available include birth control pills to regulate periods or insulin-sensitizing agents to help the body become more sensitive to insulin or a few other treatments, but these options can prevent or have effects on pregnancy, therefore a woman’s desire to conceive should be considered before exploring these options.

Since PCOS is so common, there are numerous resources, associations, and online forums that allow women to share their experiences, gain knowledge, and develop a better understanding of their condition while being able to explore new options.  In addition to online resources, it is important that women who think they have PCOS or have been diagnosed consult their physicians to maintain their reproductive health.
