What is meaningless sex anyway?
What is meaningless sex anyway? “Boom” by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb attempts to answer this and many other questions in a humorous, yet significant, way.
The show is about the apocalypse as seen from the perspective of Jules’ pet fish. Jules, named after Jules Verne, author of “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” is certain that the world is about to end. He knows this because his pet fish Dorothy told him so.
Dorothy also gave him the solution - have casual sex, which will lead to a repopulation of the universe. It might be illogical, but so is an intimate bond between a pet lover and his fish. It might also be argued that casual sex is illogical as it is not usually intended to lead to a scientific reproduction of the species.
So Jules is in his basement, a subterranean laboratory, attempting to have sex with Jo, a woman who answered a Craigslist personals ad. Add to this situation the fact that Jules is gay; Jo is anti-babies; and Barbara, a history docent, is sitting in the corner observing, and you have the layout of “Boom.” And wait, I am just getting to the discussions about hyenas and newscaster hair.
In short, "Boom" is a seemingly simple yet exquisitely complex show that introduces a fish's perspective about a human's place in the world. What do we value? And what is meaningless sex anyway?
