Okay, I know most of you already may think I'm out of touch with reality. But honestly, I am astounded at the concept of celebrity as it currently applies to the world of today. I can't really tell you why things are the way they are I only know that they are. What things am I talking about? Well tell me, can anyone reading this tell me that the music of the so called stars of today receives as much publicity as their behavior? I just can't understand this nor will I be a party to it in anything I write.
Each day as I browse the headlines I find story after story about singers who claim to be singers though in reality they are gang members who talk or prostitutes who sell themselves to the highest bidder or dancers who can't sing but electronically enhance their voice to make it at least in tune. Tell me something, is this the best we can find? Is there no one left who can simply sing a nice song?
It has probably been more than 25 years since I watched a music related awards show. Maybe even 30 years. I don't really recall because such shows are nothing more than political exhibitions. The disgusting degradation of an art form that was built and nurtured by those who had respect for themselves and their audiences is appalling not appealing. I really don't care what some 20 year old girl is wearing when singing on stage. Obviously such people don't have enough talent to have people talk about their voice. I haven't read a review of any one as a singer. I hear about their clothes, their dance, their risqué behavior... Never simply their voice. I watched that disgusting exhibition at the Super Bowl last year when a couple of women scantily clad ran around the stage screaming and moaning to the cheers of the audience. Was that singing? No one said anything about their limited vocal ability. They only talked about how exciting the show was. What show? They are called singers. The only show is about singing as far as I know yet no one seems to even think about that.
Anyway, as it is with the so called politician in this country, I will say it about singers. Is this really the best we can do? Don't we deserve better? Perhaps not. But for me, I do believe I do.
