What is attachment parenting?

There is no exact definition to attachment parenting, and there is not a set of rules that must be followed.  Instead, attachment parenting is just an approach to parenting that focuses on several key natural parenting aspects.  Here are some of the main aspects of attachment parenting:

  • Breastfeeding.  Breastfeeding is important in attachment parenting because it promotes lots of skin to skin contact and bonding between mother and baby.  It also provides countless health benefits to the baby and the mother.
  • Co-Sleeping.  Sharing the family bed is a common attachment parenting principle because it helps promote breastfeeding  and gives the baby the security of mom and/or dad present at all times throughout the night.
  • Babywearing.  Many attachment parenting families practice babywearing to promote bonding between the mother and baby, facilitate breastfeeding, and calm fussy or colicy babies.
  • No Crying it Out.  Some parenting experts will advise parents to let newborns "cry it out".  Attachment parenting does not promote crying it out and instead encourages parents to be sensitive to their baby's cry and learn to decifer the meaning of each cry.  Babies cry because a need is present and it is the parents job to fulfill that need--not ignore it.
