I used to suggest to my readers to pick a movie for a first date, then I recommended a simple cup of coffee. As time went by and the price of coffee/ movies rose as fast as our age, I decided the time is ripe for short cuts.
Here is my idea of a great/simple date, even if you are on a budget and your idea of dressy is a sparkling t shirt and a pair of jeans.
A night at the opera. Yep, no need to clean your reading glasses, or spit your coffee through your nose, opera it is.
Let me explain. Opera season in Phoenix spans from October to March. You don’t need to buy a pass for the whole season; there are prices/times for all schedules and budgets and also discounts for seniors. Check out their web site at azopera.com. First let me explain why I think opera night makes for a perfect date. You'll mingle with people your age, so it is age appropriate.
You’ll notice people over 50 holding hands, a very refreshing sight. Also noticeable, no very strict dress code, you can wear a suit or a shirt and clean slack/skirt and you’ll be fine. You can park for about $5 per event. In general they have a major intermission and you’ll get a chance to get a cup of coffee, the profit goes to charity, or a glass of wine while mingling with other opera buffs.
If you decide to do this at the last minute, you may get some $20 tickets and you’ll be sitting in the nose bleeder seats, among serious opera lovers. There is no talking while the singing goes on and during intermission the only way to communicate is by speaking into someone’s ear! I think I pretty much made my case, don’t you think?
