Let me start by saying that the Catholic Church is not against science; rather, let me remind you that much of modern Western scientific thought sprang from the bosom of the Catholic Church. Likewise, Catholicism is not against higher learning; moreover, higher learning, in the form of Universities, actually started from within the bosom of the Catholic Church. And most certainly, the Catholic Church is not against sound philosophical thinking; actually, all sound philosophy finds a home in Truth, particularly in the fullness of Catholic Truth. All one has to do is think of Plato and Augustine, and Aristotle and Aquinas.
The problem, rather, is the odd marriage of progressive Catholicism with pseudo-science and unsound philosophy. Catholics are infected with 'ism's' and 'ist's.'
Progressive Catholics, in an awkward fit to fit in, have adopted many atheist-materialist, postmodern secularist philosophies, antithetical to Catholic Theological Tradition. Subsequently, many American Catholics think like an atheist and vote like an atheist.
Pro-Choice Catholics are infected with worldly ism's and ist's!
Relativism preaches inclusion and non-prejudice to the prejudice of religious beliefs. Secularism teaches us to place our religion and our morality in a Sunday morning box while walking the popular democratic way in public--even if it offends our religious convictions. Utilitarianism tells us, through many popular movies and television shows, that the ends always justify the means; for example, a great career is justified in killing a glob of flesh (an unborn baby) in the belly! Socialism speaks to the heart of justice in food for everyone's belly through stealing hard earned money from other people's pockets! Materialism preaches the dogma of pseudo-science in the lack of a metaphysical reality.
All this is accomplished through the atheist who either despises or disregards God, the reductionist who reduces all explanations to the molecular level, the modern and postmodern progressive Catholic Biblical scholar who reduces the miraculous in a reductionist style, the Bishop who cowardly buys into all this and allows this kind of teaching in his diocesan catechetical schools, and the lukewarm Catholic too lazy to study his, or her, faith.
The result: a declining national morality, 55+ million abortions, increasing divorce, President Barack Obama (and constituents), and who knows what else?
